Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister, Timothy Kabba, has met with the Head of State of Guinea, Col. Mamadi Dumbuya, in Conakry to resolve a recent diplomatic impasse.

Sierraloaded previously reported that a high-level Sierra Leonean delegation, including Foreign Minister Timothy Kabba, was in Guinea to investigate the recent seizure of cocaine in a vehicle belonging to the Sierra Leonean Embassy in Conakry.

On January 13, 2025, Guinean authorities impounded the embassy vehicle and apprehended the driver and another occupant on suspicion of possessing cocaine, according to a statement released by the Sierra Leone Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministry confirmed reports that seven suitcases of cocaine and $2,000 were allegedly found in the vehicle.

The incident has sparked public concern in Sierra Leone, fueled by previous reports of citizens’ involvement in drug trafficking. The government initially announced its intention to recall Ambassador Alimamy Bangura for questioning, promising a full investigation and prosecution of those involved.

However, conflicting reports have emerged, with Guinean authorities reportedly stating that the ambassador would not be permitted to leave Guinea and would face trial there. The Sierra Leonean government has yet to clarify the ambassador’s current status, leaving many uncertain about his whereabouts and raising questions about the intended recall.

At press time, the outcome of the investigation and the decision reached by both governments remain unclear. However, it has been reported that no substantive evidence has linked Ambassador Alimamy Bangura to any wrongdoing.

Reports indicate that both the Minister and the Ambassador have since returned to Sierra Leone, and a press engagement is expected to update the public on the situation.
