The General Manager of the National Tourist Board, Fatmata H. Carew, is facing legal action from the National Social Security and Insurance Trust (NASSIT) for failing to remit social security contributions amounting to over six hundred million Leones (old notes) for the Board’s employees.

This case was brought before Magistrate Sahr Kekura at the NASSIT Court.

The charge stems from alleged negligence under Section 32(1)(c) of the National Social Security and Insurance Trust Act No. 5 of 2001, which mandates employers to contribute to their employees’ social security. The Tourist Board, under the management of Carew, failed to make these payments on various occasions between July 2018 and April 2024, with the total outstanding sum calculated to be Le 692,461.75 in new Leones.

NASSIT’s lawyer, Farakhan Sesay Esq., informed the court that both institutions are currently negotiating a settlement to ensure the owed contributions are paid within the required timeframe. The case has been adjourned until September 28, 2024.

The outcome of these negotiations will determine how the debt is settled and whether further legal action will be necessary.
