The United States Embassy in Sierra Leone has completed a three-day intensive training programme for provincial journalists in Bo, aimed at strengthening digital journalism, artificial intelligence (AI), audience engagement, and media sustainability skills among media practitioners in the country’s southeastern region.

The training brought together journalists from radio stations in Bo, Kenema, Moyamba, and Pujehun districts, providing participants with practical knowledge and modern newsroom tools to improve reporting and enhance digital media operations.

Facilitated by Joel Abdulai Kallon and Tracy J. During of Meraki Analytics Sierra Leone, the programme focused on equipping journalists with the skills required to adapt to the rapidly evolving media landscape.

The training curriculum covered key areas including digital media transformation, professional social media management, digital storytelling, audience engagement, WhatsApp journalism, artificial intelligence applications in journalism, digital analytics, media monetization, and sustainability strategies.

Speaking during the programme, the U.S. Embassy’s Media Coordinator, Hassan Jalloh, said the initiative demonstrates the Embassy’s commitment to supporting media development and strengthening the capacity of journalists across Sierra Leone.

He noted that provincial journalists play an essential role in informing local communities and emphasized the importance of equipping them with modern digital skills and responsible AI tools to enhance journalism and promote a more resilient media sector.

Lead facilitator Joel Abdulai Kallon encouraged journalists to embrace technological advancements while maintaining the principles of ethical and professional journalism.

He stated that the changing media environment requires journalists to master digital tools without compromising accuracy, credibility, and journalistic standards.

Co-facilitator Tracy J. During highlighted the significance of digital analytics in helping media institutions understand audience behavior, improve content delivery, and build sustainable digital platforms.

Participants described the training as timely and beneficial, particularly the sessions on artificial intelligence, social media branding, WhatsApp journalism, and digital monetization, which they said would enhance newsroom productivity and audience engagement.

The programme concluded with practical presentations by participants, who showcased projects developed during the training before receiving certificates of completion.

The initiative reaffirmed the United States Embassy’s continued support for media development, digital innovation, and capacity building for journalists across Sierra Leone.
