The University of Sierra Leone, through its Academic & Career Advisory, Counseling and Student Complaints Services (ACACSC), has issued an urgent notice to its student body in light of the significant increase in confirmed monkeypox (Mpox) cases across the country.

As of May 6, 2025, the Ministry of Health reported a total of 1,481 confirmed cases, with 1,177 currently active and 95 new cases identified. The majority of those infections have been concentrated in the Western Urban and Western Rural areas, where many students and their families reside.

In response to this public health concern, the has emphasized the importance of maintaining good hygiene practices. Students are advised to wash their hands frequently with soap and water or use hand sanitizer.

They further urged to avoid close contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms such as rashes, fever, or swollen lymph nodes.

The university has also recommended that students refrain from sharing personal items, including towels, clothing, and bedding, to minimize the risk of transmission. Wearing face masks in crowded or enclosed spaces has been strongly encouraged as a precautionary measure.

In their statement, university officials stressed, “Report any symptoms immediately to the university clinic or nearest health centre, or call the national emergency line 117. Follow all health advisories from the National Public Health Authority, government sources, and the university without delay.”

The health and safety of students and staff remain a top priority for the university. Officials have called on students to cooperate fully with those guidelines to help maintain a safe and conducive learning environment during the health crisis.
