Kandeh Yumkella Orders Comprehensive Audit of EDSA Over Poor Performance

Alhaji Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, chairman of both the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change Renewable Energy and Food Security (PI-CREF) and the Energy Governance Coordination Group (EGCG) has announced a comprehensive audit of the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA).

The audit will cover financial, technical, and operational aspects of the organization.

Dr. Yumkella expressed concern about EDSA’s performance, citing inefficiencies, questionable payments, and a significant shortfall in revenue collection. He revealed that EDSA currently collects 5 million USD per month, significantly less than the expected 8 million USD. The audit aims to uncover the reasons behind this discrepancy and address any financial mismanagement.

“We know during the process of this audit, there will be pains, but when the system is not working it is not working, so we are going to fix it,” Dr. Yumkella stated, emphasizing the urgent need for reform within EDSA.

The audit will also focus on technical issues, including the metering system and overall operational efficiency. Dr. Yumkella stressed the importance of a reformed and efficient EDSA in attracting investors and achieving the country’s energy goals. He highlighted the need for a professional and technically competent board to oversee the organization.

Dr. Yumkella emphasized that fixing the energy sector is crucial for Sierra Leone’s development and economic growth.

He criticized past “quick fixes” and advocated for sustainable, long-term solutions. He outlined plans to expand the Bumbuna hydroelectric power plant, develop solar power projects, and improve the national transmission infrastructure.
