Energy Sector Lead, Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, recently conducted an inspection of the district electrification project in Kambia, commending contractors for their dedication while urging them to accelerate efforts to ensure timely completion.
His visit follows a recent tragic incident involving the loss of a worker’s life and serious injuries to another.
The Government of Sierra Leone’s ambitious Seven Districts Electrification Project, launched between 2020 and 2021, aims to bring power to Kailahun, Moyamba, Kabala, Pujehun, Bonthe Island, Mattru Jong, and Kambia. During his inspection, Dr. Yumkella reiterated the project’s importance and encouraged contractors to maintain their commitment.
However, Dr. Yumkella also addressed a fatal accident at the field office of the company implementing the township electrification project. He expressed his condolences for the loss of a worker and called on the company to prioritize workplace safety, assuring that a thorough investigation is underway.
It would be recalled that two contractors from CL Group Limited, Abu Kamara and Abdulai Mustapha, were involved in an accident on March 14, 2025, in Malal, Kambia District. While installing transmission cables, a pole collapsed, resulting in Kamara’s death and serious injuries to Mustapha, who is currently receiving treatment at Connaught Hospital in Freetown.
The Ministry of Energy has confirmed the incident and pledged to investigate whether the poles used in the project met the required safety and quality standards stipulated in the August 2020 contract with CL Group Limited.
