Sierra Leone’s Chief Minister, David Moinina Sengeh, has responded to concerns raised by a Sierra Leonean entrepreneur on Twitter regarding plastic use and waste disposal in the country.

The entrepreneur’s tweet highlighted the need for a serious discussion on this issue in Lungi.

Chief Minister Sengeh, in his response, suggested a proactive approach, stating, “Maybe you can look into such a business model and inspire one of those organizations through GEM? We need our youth and entrepreneurs to join in turning these things into opportunities. I have seen that often there’s investment available – we just need to connect the dots. Lehgo.”

Another Twitter user chimed in, emphasizing the importance of finding economic viability in recycling plastic waste. They pointed out that while manufacturers claim it’s not economically feasible, used water sachets are successfully collected and recycled in Guinea, raising questions about the differences in approaches.

Furthermore, the user mentioned that several entrepreneurs in Sierra Leone are already producing building blocks and tiles, both for roofs and floors, from recycled plastics. The challenges they face are related to scaling and gaining wider acceptance. The tweet suggested that these challenges are not insurmountable and cited @walidbahsoon as an example, who is working towards proving the viability of such initiatives.
