Sierra Leone government officials, led by Dr. Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, engaged with international energy firms at the Powering Africa Summit (PAS25) in Washington, D.C., seeking collaborations and investments to boost the nation’s energy sector.

The summit, focused on finance’s role in African energy development, provided a platform for Sierra Leone to highlight its energy needs and potential.

Dr. Yumkella, serving as the Energy Sector Lead, and Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Julius Mattai, held discussions with Sun Africa, a solar energy solutions developer. Sun Africa executives expressed interest in visiting Sierra Leone later this month to discuss potential large-scale solar and off-grid energy projects with government officials.

Further bolstering Sierra Leone’s renewable energy prospects, Dr. Yumkella strengthened ties with Norwegian energy firm, SCATEC. The company has announced plans for a 40-megawatt renewable energy project in Kamakwei Town, Karene District.

Minister Mattai addressed the summit, emphasizing the energy demands of Sierra Leone’s mining sector and advocating for investments to support both mining and energy development.

Dr. Yumkella also conveyed Sierra Leone’s readiness for mutually beneficial investment partnerships, outlining the nation’s current energy landscape and its future development goals.
