Political analyst Edward W. J. Caulker says the 2028 general elections will be a key measure of the leadership legacy of Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) National Chairman Jimmy Batilo Songa.

Speaking on AYV, Caulker stated that Songa’s tenure will ultimately be assessed by whether the SLPP retains power or returns to opposition after the next polls.

The current SLPP executive was elected with a mandate to deliver electoral success. Caulker noted that the leadership team was selected to include individuals seen as politically assertive, tasked with strengthening the party’s position as it adopts a new strategic direction ahead of the 2028 election cycle.

Caulker added that beyond the outcome of the election, the 2028 polls will serve as an evaluation of the current leadership’s effectiveness. He said many party members believe the executive has the political energy and capacity to maintain governance.

As the 2028 election approaches, analysts are monitoring the SLPP’s internal reforms and strategic positioning in what is expected to be a competitive contest with opposition parties. Caulker’s comments reflect wider discussion on the expectations placed on the SLPP leadership as it prepares for the next general election.
