Two opposition All People’s Congress (APC) Members of Parliament, Hon. Mohamed Bangura and Hon. Alfred Thompson, may lose their parliamentary seats pending a decision by the party’s upcoming national delegate conference, opposition leader Hon. Abdul Kargbo has confirmed.
The two legislators are currently under suspension by the APC for defying the party’s directive to boycott governance following the disputed June 24, 2023, general elections. Unlike the majority of their APC colleagues who adhered to the boycott, Bangura and Thompson took their oaths of office in August 2023, becoming the only APC representatives in Parliament.
Speaking to reporters, Hon. Kargbo explained that under Sierra Leone’s proportional representation system, MPs can only lose their seats when their political party formally withdraws its symbol from them. However, he noted that such an action requires authorization from a national delegate conference.
“Those two MPs are currently under suspension by the party for now,” Hon. Kargbo said. “When the party meets at our national congress, we will decide on what to do with them”.
The APC leadership has been vocal about reinforcing discipline among its parliamentary members. “Once we’ve identified the bad eggs, it is crucial to ensure that our members uphold the integrity of the party,” Kargbo asserted.
The suspension of Bangura and Thompson dates back to September 2023, when the APC’s National Disciplinary and Grievance Handling Committee invoked Article 59 of the party’s constitution to launch an inquiry into their actions. A formal suspension letter cited “continuous breaches” of party directives and stated that the suspension would remain in effect pending the conclusion of the inquiry.
Hon. Mohamed Bangura, a former Minister of Information under the previous APC administration, was born December 7, 1971, in Karene District. Hon. Alfred Thompson represents the Western Urban district and took his oath on August 8, 2023.
