The Presidential Spokesman for the Sierra Leone Government, Alhaji Alpha Kanu said they will not cajole Members of Parliament of the main opposition, All People’s Congress (APC) to serve in Parliament.

We are not going to cajole them to go to Parliament because Parliament is interesting when we have divergent views.

“They (APC MPs) not going to Parliament will not stop anything,” the Presidential Spokesman said.

He maintained that the absence of APC MPs will not affect the operations of the House since the law requires only 44 MPs for full operations.

As of now, we have 95 MPs,” Kanu said.

He said the 95 MPs make up the necessary decorum for passing laws.

It is however much better if they participate in Parliament,” he said.

The main opposition party is boycotting governance due to disagreement with election results announced by the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL). The party said the results have statistical inconsistencies and that the ECSL should announce results by polling station.

A dialogue managed by the Commonwealth are currently underway between the APC and the Government. Success of the dialogue could end the current political impasse in the West African nation.
