The National Executive Council (NEC) of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) has adopted eleven key resolutions regarding the conduct of lower-level and re-run elections within the party.
During its meeting on Monday, March 24, 2025, NEC instructed the national executive to promptly finalize and release the schedule for the remaining executive-level elections by Wednesday, March 26, 2025.
In a bid to expedite the process, NEC authorized the national executive to shorten the publication period for the delegates’ list, ensuring a swift and efficient electoral timeline.
As part of the resolutions, the national executive was also directed to publish the composition of district-independent bodies responsible for overseeing the re-run of executive elections.
These bodies, to be established by Wednesday, March 26, 2025, will include a former Member of Parliament (MP), two members/trustees of the Elders Council (one male, one female), an elderly woman, and a young person. The independent body will be tasked with managing the re-run elections while working in collaboration with party structures.
Furthermore, NEC endorsed the decision by the national executive to suspend Mr. Harry Morseray Caulker and Mr. Prince Kallon for taking legal action against the party in the United Kingdom.
To address the internal disputes within the SLPP UK and Ireland branch, NEC mandated National Secretary General Umaru Napoleon Koroma, Majority Leader of Parliament Hon. Sahr Mathew Nyuma, and Chairman of the Peace and Reconciliation Committee John Oponjo Benjamin to travel to the UK to reconcile members and conduct regional elections in line with the SLPP’s August 2020 Constitution. This process is to be completed before the National Delegates Conference for the election of national officers.
Additionally, NEC directed the party’s reconciliation committee to visit all districts in Sierra Leone to engage party members and foster unity ahead of the National Delegates Conference. The Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) will be responsible for monitoring all re-run and other elections within the party, ensuring compliance with its mandate.
In a move to streamline party administration, NEC ruled that only NEC members will be permitted to attend future NEC meetings unless specifically invited by the national secretariat. Party members were urged to prioritize unity and maintain peace and stability within the SLPP and the nation at large.
The adoption of these resolutions marks a crucial step in the SLPP’s internal electoral process, reinforcing the party’s commitment to organizational efficiency, reconciliation, and democratic governance.
