The Sierra Leone Canoe Federation (SLCF) has officially announced the launch of its first-ever National Canoe Championship, marking a significant step in the development of aquatic sports in the country.
The historic event is scheduled to take place on April 27, 2026, at the Sea Coach Express facilities in Aberdeen, Freetown. It is expected to bring together athletes from sixteen coastal communities, reflecting a broad and growing interest in canoeing across Sierra Leone.
Participating communities include Tombo, Bureh, Mama Beach, Sussex, Lumley, Aberdeen, and Tokeh, among others. Competitors will take part in multiple sprint categories, including single-occupant, two-person, five-person, and 10-person dragon canoe races, showcasing a range of skill levels and team dynamics.
SLCF President Abdul Karim Koroma described the championship as a milestone for the federation and the sport. He noted that the initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to professionalize canoeing and increase its visibility nationwide.
Secretary General Donald Kalokoh highlighted the strong level of participation, stating that the response from coastal communities demonstrates the steady growth of canoeing as a competitive sport in Sierra Leone.
The event has also drawn support from the media. Sahr Morris Jr., representing the Sports Writers Association of Sierra Leone (SWASAL), commended the federation’s efforts, describing the championship as an important move toward strengthening grassroots sports and expanding opportunities for local athletes.
With preparations underway, the inaugural championship is expected to attract considerable public attention and serve as a platform for discovering and nurturing talent in one of the country’s emerging sporting disciplines.
