Sierra Leone’s Leone Stars secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over regional rivals Liberia in a tightly contested international friendly at the Southern Arena on Saturday.

A second-half breakthrough by Abdul Jarju Kabia was enough to break the deadlock and give the home side bragging rights in the latest chapter.

Following a scoreless and highly physical first half, both teams pushed for an advantage after the interval. The decisive breakthrough finally came in the 66th minute, when Abdul Jarju Kabia found space in the box to slot home a clinical strike, sparking celebrations among his teammates and the home crowd.

Under the guidance of caretaker coach John Keister, Sierra Leone fielded a balanced squad blending seasoned veterans with emerging prospects. The defense, marshaled tightly throughout the 90 minutes, successfully neutralized Liberia’s attacking threats to keep a clean sheet and see out the narrow victory.

Despite all the chances from the Lone Stars of Liberia, the visitors were unable to crack Sierra Leone’s backline before the referee blew the final whistle.

The victory gives Sierra Leone early momentum in this two-match international friendly series.

The Leone Stars will now prepare to travel across the border to Monrovia, where Liberia will host them for the return fixture on Tuesday, June 9, at the Samuel Kanyon Doe (SKD) Sports Complex.

Expecting the Lone Stars to seek redemption on their own turf in what promises to be another fiery encounter.
