The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) has commenced a three-week CAF D Diploma Coaching Course at its headquarters in Freetown, as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots football development in the country.
The course has attracted 40 participants and will run for 60 hours, covering technical, theoretical and practical components aimed at equipping aspiring coaches with essential skills to train and develop young players.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, SLFA Deputy General Secretary, Ishmail Saidu Kanu urged participants to take the training seriously. He noted that coaching education remains a priority for the association and encouraged attendees to use the opportunity to improve their competence and contribute to the growth of football in Sierra Leone.

The programme is being led by SLFA Technical Director, John Keister, who emphasized the importance of discipline and professionalism in coaching. He told participants that beyond technical knowledge, values such as integrity and honesty are vital in shaping players and advancing the game.
Also addressing the participants, SLFA Director of Competitions, Sorie Ibrahim Sesay, highlighted the importance of coaching qualifications in modern football. He stated that recognized licenses are increasingly required for participation in and competitions, urging participants to take the course as a key step in their coaching careers.

As part of the training, participants will undertake a one-week attachment with clubs. The internship will provide practical experience, allowing trainees to observe professional environments and apply their knowledge in real coaching settings.
The initiative forms part of the SLFA’s broader strategy to improve coaching standards and develop qualified personnel capable of nurturing football talent across Sierra Leone.
