Sierra Leone’s National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has launched a new multilingual app targeted to aid the public understand disaster-related terms.
The app called Terminology Application will help the local population to be more informed on how to react disasters.
NDMA’s Director of Risk Reduction and Preparedness, Thomas Lebbie told Politico that they decide to create the app specifically to solve the knowledge gap with regards disaster terms.
Lebbie said the app is user-friendly and comes with five different languages to cater for the unlettered population.
He said the app comes in Krio, Temne, Mende, Limba and Kono.
The Director said the press can also benefit from the app when reporting on disasters.
Special Representative from the Young Men Christian Association (YMCA), Clifford Metzger said he was part of the first launch but believed that the later version is better than the former one.
“Communication of all sorts is important, it is even more important when lives are being saved because they have access to the right information,” Metzger informed Politico.
He said his institution have plans to partner with NDMA and the UNDP to embark on climate change sensitisation across the country.
The DRR Terminology app has been made available on Google Play store but iPhone users would have to wait a little longer.
