Jeety Trading is providing free meals to over a thousand Lumley youths every Saturday in Freetown.
The gesture is also a part of the Shri Gurudwara Sahib ji ceremony of Sikhism which draws hundreds of youths to the Lumley community where they are served a plate of rice with water.
Sikhs, who believe that all humans are equal, provide free food to communities to get closer to God. The free food is handed out to anyone who visits the “gurudwara” irrespective of faith or creed. The ceremony, which is also referred to as Langar, is practised in communities where Sikhs live and work.
Sikhism is a religion that originates from the Punjab Region of India and is considered one of the largest with at least 25 million followers worldwide. Sikhs in Sierra Leone are considered to be peaceful and magnanimous to their communities. The group owns several businesses in and out of the capital, Freetown including the famous Guru Nanak Building material stores found in many parts of the country.
