Indian authorities have arrested an Ivory Coast national who was caught smuggling 1.13 kilograms of cocaine into the country after arriving from Sierra Leone.
The arrest took place at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai last Thursday. According to reports, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) stopped the passenger based on a tip-off that someone arriving from West Africa may be carrying narcotics.
After being questioned, the passenger admitted to swallowing drug-filled capsules to bring them into India. A total of 67 capsules, containing 1.13 kilograms of cocaine, were removed from his body at a government hospital.

The cocaine, estimated to be worth around USD 1.36 million, was seized under India’s Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. The passenger was taken into custody and remains under investigation as DRI looks into whether others are involved.
The accused had flown into Mumbai from Sierra Leone, making this case especially notable to observers in West Africa. Authorities have not yet confirmed if the drug operation has ties to any local or international trafficking networks.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities look into possible links to a wider trafficking network.
