Presidential Spokesman, Alhaji Alpha Kanu, has argued that the price of rice rose significantly higher during the tenure of the previous government, the All People’s Congress (APC), compared to the current administration led by the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).

Speaking on Liberty TV Online, Kanu analyzed the price trends of rice over the past years, emphasizing the APC’s governance from 2007 to 2018.

He noted that when the APC assumed power in 2007, the cost of a bag of rice was approximately Le60. However, by the time the APC handed over power to the SLPP in 2018, the price had surged to Le300, representing a fivefold increase.

Kanu contrasted this with the current situation under the SLPP, which took office in 2018. He stated that upon taking power, the price of rice was already set at Le300.

As of this year, he confirmed that the price has risen to Le650, marking only a twofold increase despite ongoing global inflation pressures.

“The cost of a bag of rice increased five times higher during the tenure of the APC government,” Kanu emphasized.

“In contrast, the SLPP has managed to keep the increase to just two times higher, demonstrating that the current government is performing much better,” he concluded.
