The U.S. government has introduced the CBP Home Mobile App an initiative by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) designed to provide noncitizens who have overstayed their visas or otherwise remained in the country unlawfully an opportunity to voluntarily depart the United States in a structured and dignified manner.
On June 4, 2025, the U.S. government issued a proclamation placing restrictions on certain visa categories for Sierra Leonean and other Countries around the world.
The CBP Home App offers an alternative to traditional immigration enforcement practices by allowing eligible individuals to register for voluntary self-departure. According to CBP, the app aims to facilitate “safe and orderly” departures while minimizing the need for arrest, detention, or the use of restraints.
Officials describe the app as a free, user-friendly platform that allows individuals to arrange their departure on their own terms. Participants who opt into the program receive significant incentives, including government-covered travel expenses, forgiveness of fines associated with failure to depart, and a $1,000 “exit bonus” intended to support reintegration in their country of origin.
The CBP Home program reflects a balanced approach to border enforcement one that supports law, order, and humanity dignity.
The program is not open to everyone. Eligibility is based on specific criteria, including immigration history, criminal background, and national security considerations. Individuals must not be subject to active criminal proceedings or pose a public safety risk.
Immigration policy experts note that the program could serve dual purposes: reducing the number of people subject to removal orders while easing the burden on immigration detention systems. Whether it will result in meaningful policy change remains to be seen.
The CBP Home Mobile App is currently available for download on both Android and iOS platforms. Users are required to create an account, verify their identity, and follow a series of guided steps to initiate the departure process.
