Renowned Sierra Leonean rapper, Natasha Beckley, popularly known as Swadu, has publicly announced her candidacy for the Deputy Chairmanship of the All People’s Congress (APC) in Port Loko district.
The bold move is considered a bold step in her journey from music to politics, as she aims to challenge stereotypes surrounding women’s roles in leadership.
In a recent statement, Swadu expressed her pride in her political journey, which according to her, began about eight years ago.
“How can a former Miss Sierra Leone become a politician? Because of beauty, some will see you as worthless. How can a rapper be a politician? Because of your career path, you are classed as uneducated,” she said, lamenting over the societal biases she has faced.
Beckley emphasized the importance of inspiring the youth of Sierra Leone, stating, “As leaders in our country, our job is to inspire the nation’s youths, leading by example that dreams come true when you believe in yourself.”
“It takes audacity, and confidence to publicly decelear for positions in a male dominated space. In lower level elections women will aspire for the Chairlady positions stereotypically allocated for women,” she asserted.
“This September, I aim to break that stereotype in Port Loko district,” she declared, showcasing her determination to pave the way for women in politics.
Natasha believes that “trying and failing is not failure, but the fear to try and not trying at all is failure.” She encourages others to “never second guess yourself, lead with great intentions, and work hard to achieve your goal.”
Her candidacy is deemed a significant shift in the political narrative, as she seeks to empower women and challenge traditional norms within Sierra Leone’s political framework.
