The Auditor-General of Sierra Leone, Abdul Aziz, and a delegation from the Audit Service Sierra Leone (ASSL) have met with Chief Justice Hon. Justice Komba Kamanda to explore ways of enhancing collaboration between their institutions in promoting accountability.
During the courtesy call at the Chief Justice’s Chambers in the Law Courts Building, Abdul Aziz congratulated Justice Kamanda on his recent appointment as head of the Judiciary and expressed appreciation for the Judiciary’s input in the drafting of the Audit Service Regulations 2024.
The Auditor-General highlighted the Judiciary’s role in processes related to surcharge outcomes and reaffirmed the ASSL’s mandate to audit all public entities, including the Judiciary.
Senior ASSL officials briefed the Chief Justice on previous consultations held during the regulations’ formulation and outlined provisions on surcharge and disallowance under various laws, including the Audit Service Act 2014 (as amended in 2023), the Local Government Act 2022, and the Public Financial Management Act 2016.
Chief Justice Kamanda acknowledged the importance of cooperation between oversight bodies and pledged the Judiciary’s readiness to address matters brought to its attention. He commended the ASSL’s work and described an independent national audit institution as vital for national development.
Justice Alusine Sesay also expressed support for the ASSL’s oversight role and recommended training for judges on surcharge and disallowance provisions through the Judicial and Legal Training Institute.
