The Secretary General of INTERPOL, Valdecy Urquiza, met with Sierra Leone’s Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, during the 27th INTERPOL African Regional Conference in Cape Town, South Africa.
The two officials discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in tackling transnational organised crime. During the meeting, Inspector General Sellu shared updates on Sierra Leone’s work to improve coordination between national security agencies, including efforts to boost information and data sharing.
He also spoke about the role of INTERPOL in supporting national policing efforts through access to global policing tools, and how Sierra Leone has been making use of those tools to track and respond to criminal networks operating across borders.
Secretary General Urquiza also spoke on ongoing collaboration with regional bodies and plans to bring INTERPOL operations closer to countries through decentralised systems. He expressed interest in working more closely with the West African Police Chiefs Committee.
The meeting also touched on Sierra Leone’s role at the global level, including recent contributions made through the United Nations Security Council. INTERPOL recognised the country’s efforts to support international cooperation in fighting cross-border crime.

Discussions focused on joint operations, intelligence sharing, and the use of technology to address new crime trends affecting the continent.
The engagement ended with both sides agreeing to maintain close working ties and explore new ways to address organised crime affecting the region.
