The coastal town of Tombo, Sierra Leone’s largest fishing hub, has finally been connected to the Freetown electricity supply after years of dependence on alternative methods to preserve fish.
Home to the country’s biggest fish landing site, Tombo has long struggled with storage challenges. Fishmongers relied on ice blocks that melted quickly, causing heavy financial losses.
With electricity now available, traders say fish can be preserved for longer periods, reducing waste and boosting incomes. Community members welcomed the development but cautioned that sustainability will depend on affordability and consistent supply.
The connection marks a major step in addressing infrastructure gaps in fishing communities that play a vital role in Sierra Leone’s economy.
