The Sierra Leone U-17 female national team has emerged victorious in the WAFU Zone A U-17 Women’s Tournament, clinching the title after an impressive display of skill and determination in Monrovia.

The young Sierra Leonean side dominated the competition, winning three of their four matches, scoring a total of 10 goals, and finishing with 10 points to top the table. The team secured two commanding victories over host nation Liberia, winning 3-0 and 4-1, while also defeating Senegal 2-1 before settling for a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture.

The tournament not only showcased the team’s strength collectively, but also individual brilliance, with several players earning top accolades. Mariam Sankoh was named Player of the Tournament, Ruth Bawoh picked up a Woman of the Match award, Sarah Turay emerged as the Highest Goal Scorer, and Hawa Morison was recognised as the Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

In response to the historic win, the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) lauded the team’s performance, calling it a product of “collective and individual brilliance” and a reflection of the “huge” potential for football in the country.

Football experts believe that the triumph marks a major milestone for Sierra Leone’s women’s football, showcasing the rising talent and promise of the nation’s youth on the regional stage.
