The Ministry of Technical and Higher Education (MTHE) has officially been admitted as a member of the West African Science Service Center on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL), following the ratification of the agreement in Parliament under the leadership of Minister Dr. Haja Ramatulai Wurie.

The confirmation was announced during the 6th WASCAL Ministerial Meeting in Conakry, Guinea, unlocking new opportunities for project funding, reliable climate data, and postgraduate training for researchers and institutions in Sierra Leone.

Representing MTHE at the meeting, Deputy Minister Sarjoh Aziz-Kamara reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to leveraging regional partnerships to tackle climate risks affecting agriculture, water, energy, and coastal communities.

“Through WASCAL, our country will gain access to the data and research networks necessary to strengthen resilience and promote sustainable development,” Aziz-Kamara stated.

The ministerial meeting brought together policymakers and experts from across West Africa to review WASCAL’s strategic plan and expand interventions in climate-smart agriculture, renewable energy, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable land management.

With this membership, MTHE has reinforced Sierra Leone’s drive toward science-led development and evidence-based climate action, aligning the country with regional efforts to address urgent climate challenges.
