The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) has dismissed viral social media allegations that 16 containers were smuggled through Freetown Port, calling the reports false, misleading, and completely unfounded.
The Authority confirmed there has been no smuggling incident within its operational areas. The viral posts provided no container numbers or shipment details to substantiate the allegation and they noted it does not operate on Sundays and that official port activities occur only on designated working days.
In an official statement, the SLPHA said, all cargo movements are subject to customs and security protocols and advanced tracking systems managed jointly with the National Revenue Authority (NRA), Sierra Leone Police, and other agencies.
The SLPHA urged the public to disregard the unfounded claims and rely only on verified updates from its official communication channels.
The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, integrity, efficiency, and modernisation in support of the Government’s national development agenda.
The Queen Elizabeth II Port is the major shipping dock for commercial cargo in Sierra Leone and reports of smuggling have left some members of the public angry due to the increasing number of drug addiction among young people in the country.
In the past, there have been reported cases of smuggling in which those implicated, in some cases, go unscathed.
