Eight schools from Bo District competed fiercely in a quiz and debate competition organized by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education on October 13, 2025, as part of the Civic Day Series.

The Resident Minister for the Southern Region, Mr. John Abu, addressed the pupils, commending the Ministry for organizing the event. He emphasized that the competition provided a platform for young people to showcase their academic talents and encouraged all students to participate fully.

The competition aimed to deepen students’ intellectual understanding of governance, education, history, and the culture of Bo District. The participating schools were Queen of the Rosary, St. Andrew Secondary School, SOS Hermann Gmeiner International School, Ahmadiyya Muslim Secondary School, Christ the King College, Bo Commercial Secondary School, Methodist High School, and Kate McGrath School.

After two rigorous rounds of questions, Jestina Smith from Queen of the Rosary School emerged as the quiz champion with 9 points. The debate competition, which spanned three rounds, featured students discussing topics including the significance of a new constitution, citizen participation in the 2026 National Census, and the use of mobile phones and AI in examinations.

The final debate topic was, “Should the government prioritize Free Quality Education or the Feed Salone Program?” Mustapha Fambulleh of Methodist High School and Haja Mariama Mansaray of Kate McGrath School advanced to the final round. After presenting compelling arguments, Mustapha Fambulleh won the debate with 29 points by convincing the audience that the government should prioritize agriculture. Haja Mariama Mansaray was the runner-up with 27 points.

Winners and runners-up received cash prizes and educational materials, including school bags and exercise books. The event underscores President Dr Julius Maada Bio’s commitment to advancing the nation’s human capital development through Free Quality Education and vocational training programs.

The Civic Day Series continues tomorrow, October 14, with top government officials engaging the people of Bo District on emerging national issues.
