The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), in collaboration with security forces, launched a joint operation on Monday, October 28, 2025, at Funkia Market in Goderich, Freetown.
The coordinated raid targeted suspected Kush dealers and sought to apprehend individuals suffering from addiction, marking a significant escalation in the government’s anti-drug efforts.
According to eyewitnesses and preliminary reports, the operation covered several known hotspots within the market, where Kush a synthetic drug linked to severe mental health and social consequences has seen a sharp rise in circulation in recent months. Officers reportedly detained several individuals and confiscated quantities of suspected narcotics.
Kush abuse has surged across Sierra Leone, particularly among youths in urban centers and surrounding communities. The drug’s affordability and potency have made it a dangerous alternative to traditional narcotics.
Funkia Market has long been identified as a key distribution hub, prompting Monday’s intervention.
Authorities emphasized that the operation forms part of a broader strategy to dismantle drug networks and rehabilitate affected individuals. NDLEA officials hinted at follow-up raids in other high-risk areas, expanded community sensitization campaigns, and the scaling up of rehabilitation services.
The public is urged to cooperate with law enforcement and report suspicious activities. Civil society organizations have also called for transparency in the arrest process and humane treatment of addicts.
This operation signals a more aggressive stance by the government in addressing drug-related challenges. While many applaud the crackdown, others stress the importance of balancing enforcement with education, prevention, and rehabilitation.
