Three individuals Janet Mariama Kamara, a surveyor; Thaimu Kargbo, a civil engineer; and Abu Bakarr Conteh, a businessman have been arrested and charged with possession and dealing in prohibited drugs following a police operation at the Sahara Hotel in Makeni, Northern Province.

The accused made their first appearance before Magistrate Mustapha Briama Jah of Pademba Road Court No. 2 in Freetown on Wednesday, 4th October 2025.

According to the charges, the defendants were found in possession of thirty-seven half-filled polythene bags, each containing cannabis (commonly known as Kush), without lawful authority. They face two counts under the National Drug Control Act, 2008 (Act No. 10 of 2008) and the Criminal Procedure Act No. 8 of 2024: possession of a prohibited drug without lawful authority, and dealing in a prohibited drug without lawful authority.

When the charges were read and explained, no plea was taken. The state prosecutor, A.B.N. Taylor Kamara Esq., requested a short adjournment to prepare evidence and serve the defense with the necessary documents.

Defense counsel Z. Denkch Esq. applied for bail on behalf of the defendants, arguing that they are Sierra Leonean residents within the jurisdiction of the court and have reliable sureties willing to stand as guarantors.

He assured the court that the accused would make themselves available on each adjournment date. The application was made pursuant to Section 76(1)(3) of the Criminal Procedure Act No. 8 of 2024.

The matter has been adjourned to a later date to allow the prosecution to complete preparations, while the court is expected to rule on the bail application at the next sitting
