President Julius Maada Bio today led the nation in promoting peace, healing, and unity by wearing a white ribbon at State House, ahead of Sierra Leone’s first National Remembrance Day on 18 January 2026.

In a statement, President Bio urged all citizens to participate in the symbolic gesture by wearing a white ribbon or cloth from 14 to 21 January 2026, emphasizing that the initiative is a call for collective reflection, reconciliation, and national solidarity.

“Let us remember our past, embrace peace, and strengthen national bonds,” the President said. “The white ribbon represents our commitment to healing, unity, and a future built on harmony.”

Earlier this month, President Bio announced the establishment of January 18 as the National Day of Remembrance, adding to Sierra Leone’s calendar of national commemorations.

According to the government the National Day of Remembrance provides an opportunity for collective reflection, recognition of the suffering endured during the war, and reinforcement of national unity. Noting that recognizing the sacrifices of victims and survivors is essential to preventing a return to violence and political divisions.
