Further details have emerged following the tension that erupted earlier Friday 30th January 2026 at the Port Loko Correctional Centre.

According to information gathered during a phone conversation with a senior prison officer, the incident began as an internal fight between rival inmate factions within the facility. One inmate, identified as “Wizzy,” was mentioned as a notable figure in the clash. The situation later escalated into a revolt when correctional officers attempted to restore calm.

The exact cause of the internal fight has not yet been officially confirmed. However, unverified reports suggest that the dispute is linked to concerns over food and other welfare facilities.

From the conversation, the prison officer confirmed that some people sustained injuries during the unrest and are currently responding to medical treatment. No deaths were recorded, and no inmate escaped during the incident.

Although officials are yet to release a comprehensive damage assessment, it has been confirmed that properties within the facility were destroyed, including the internal administrative offices, inmates’ food supplies, and other items, which were reportedly set ablaze during the chaos.

Speaking on the situation, the Resident Minister for the North-West Region, Ambassador Umaru Bond Wurrie, expressed disappointment over claims that the incident was food-related, noting that he had been regularly checking on the welfare of inmates. Together with the Mayor of Port Loko City, the Minister sympathized with all affected persons, particularly female inmates who were not involved in the disturbance.

The Minister assured the public that a full investigation will be conducted to establish the true cause of the incident and prevent future occurrences. The suspected lead inmate was later removed from the facility in a military truck, by some of the military officers deployed to help restore order.

Several authorities and stakeholders visited the scene, including the Resident Minister, Mayor of Port Loko, journalists, and representatives from civil society organizations (CSOs).

Normalcy has since returned to the Port Loko Correctional Centre, while investigations into the incident continue.
