The Government of Sierra Leone, through the Kenema District Council and with funding from the Road Maintenance Fund Administration (RMFA), has officially launched the construction of five culverts and one bridge along the Borbu-Kortumahun Koya route in the Kenema District.
The symbolic handover ceremony took place in Kortumahun Koya, marking the start of a project that will improve connectivity between Nongowa and Koya chiefdoms.
The new infrastructure is expected to boost local commerce and provide safer, quicker access to schools, health facilities, and other essential services for residents who rely on this route for daily activities.
The project, which will involve the construction of five culverts and one bridge, was handed over to Africon Sierra Leone Limited for implementation. Engineer Mohamed Feika, representing the Kenema District Council, confirmed that construction would begin immediately and is expected to be completed within four months.
At the ceremony, Mr. Andrew Ansu Fatorma, Chairman of the RMFA Board of Directors, announced that NLe 1,400,000 has been allocated for the project. He emphasized that the works are aligned with President Bio’s development priorities and urged the local community to take ownership of the infrastructure to ensure its long-term benefits for the nation.

Speaking at the commissioning event, Md. Francesa Jambawai, Chairperson of the Kenema District Council, expressed her gratitude to the government for its commitment to the district’s development. She thanked the councilors and staff for their ongoing support and reaffirmed the council’s dedication to creating opportunities that improve living standards across Kenema.
Representatives from Africon Sierra Leone Limited assured the beneficiaries that the project would be completed within the agreed timeframe, and called for cooperation from the local community to ensure the smooth progress of the works.
Community leaders and stakeholders expressed deep appreciation for the project, calling it the fulfillment of a long-standing aspiration. The commissioning ceremony was marked by scenes of joy and thanksgiving, concluding with a traditional pouring of libation at one of the project sites.
Councilor Victor Mukeh Vandy, Chairman of the Works Committee, and Councilor Jaiga, along with several local leaders, reiterated the importance of the project for both economic activity and access to social services in the area.
Once completed, the bridge and culverts are expected to significantly improve travel times, enhance trade, and increase resilience during the rainy season. Local officials and beneficiaries pledged to closely monitor the progress of the works and ensure proper maintenance to protect the investment for years to come.
