The National Water Resources Management Agency (NWRMA) has engaged the Ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs to enhance collaboration in the sustainable management and protection of Sierra Leone’s water resources.
The discussions focused on improving coordination with local councils and traditional authorities to ensure effective regulation, monitoring, and community-level compliance with the NWRMA Act. Key priorities include decentralized water governance, stakeholder engagement, and the shared responsibility of safeguarding water resources for current and future generations.
Speaking on the initiative, the Director General of NWRMA highlighted the importance of local participation:
“Effective management of Sierra Leone’s water resources requires active participation of the country’s local administration, as water management is decentralized. This is reflected in the administrative units outlined in the Act, catchment committees, and water basin boards, all of which include local authorities and councils.”

The partnership underscores the Government’s commitment to integrated water resources management and highlights the critical role of local governance structures in protecting rivers, wetlands, and catchment areas nationwide.
Permanent Secretary Bai M. Thuray reaffirmed the Ministry’s dedication, emphasizing the significant role local authorities play in ensuring the success of the initiative.
