The Sierra Leone Police (SLP), in conjunction with local government and educational bodies, has issued an immediate temporary suspension of all street jogging and organized group jogging activities, commonly known as “cross country,” within the Bo District.

The public notice, dated February 12, 2026, was released by the SLP in collaboration with the Bo District Security Committee (DISEC), the Bo City and District Councils, the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), and associations of school principals and head teachers.

According to the notice, the decision to suspend these activities was necessitated by several “key concerns” regarding public safety and order. Authorities cited “large, unsanctioned street activities” as posing serious safety risks to both participants and the general public, noting significant disruptions to vehicular and pedestrian traffic in high-traffic areas.

The directive also highlighted issues of “disorderly conduct,” referencing reports of unruly behavior, loud music, and general public disturbance. Specific concerns regarding student welfare were raised, with officials stating that unsupervised street activities expose pupils to danger and undermine “academic focus and discipline”.

Furthermore, the notice alleged that these gatherings have been exploited for unlawful activities, including harassment of the public, property theft, and vehicle obstruction.

The suspension aims to redirect these activities to “safer, designated venues” such as stadiums, community fields, and other approved open spaces where proper supervision can be maintained.

The Sierra Leone Police and local authorities have vowed to “strictly enforce this directive” to maintain law and order. School administrators, event organizers, and the general public are urged to comply fully with the suspension to demonstrate respect for public safety and lawful directives.

The notice was signed by key regional officials, including the Regional Commander South of the SLP, the Secretary of the District Security Committee, the Deputy Director of MBSSE for Bo District, and chairpersons of the local school councils.

Authorities assured the public that further guidance on the matter would be communicated in due course.
