The Minister of Sports, Augusta James-Teima has commended Sierra Leone’s Paralympic team following a bronze medal win at the Fazza International Para Athletics Grand Prix in Dubai.
Sierra Leonean athlete Elizabeth Kargbo secured bronze in the T47 Women’s Javelin event at the prestigious international competition, marking another milestone for the country’s growing presence in para athletics.
Speaking during a recognition ceremony, the Minister described the achievement as a proud moment for Sierra Leone and praised Kargbo’s determination and resilience. She noted that the medal reflects the strength and potential of athletes within the country’s Paralympic movement.
James-Teima also applauded Unisa Deen Kargbo, President of the Paralympic Association of Sierra Leone, for his commitment and sacrifices in supporting athletes despite financial and logistical challenges.
The Minister emphasized that sports play a critical role in promoting unity, inclusion, and economic opportunity. She disclosed that the Ministry of Sports is working closely with the National Sports Authority to strengthen support systems for athletes across the country.
Highlighting government recognition of sporting excellence, James-Teima revealed that she has previously presented medal-winning athletes to President Julius Maada Bio at the State House of Sierra Leone to acknowledge their achievements and motivate them to continue raising the national flag high.
She further stressed the importance of proper documentation of athletes’ records, explaining that accurate data will enhance government reporting and improve opportunities for support and sponsorship.
Underscoring the significance of inclusivity, the Minister praised the Paralympic movement for demonstrating “ability in disability” and encouraged athletes to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to excellence.
She assured the association of continued technical and financial guidance as it seeks partnerships and funding, and urged both athletes and administrators to sustain their momentum and continue representing Sierra Leone with pride on the international stage
