The Campaign for Human Rights and Development International (CHRDI) has announced the release of two vulnerable mothers from the Sierra Leone Correctional Service in Freetown following a recent monitoring visit.
According to CHRDI, the visit uncovered a troubling pattern of women being detained over extremely small sums of money, between 2,000 and 5,000 Leones, with some cases experiencing no meaningful trial progress for months.
Through a strategic partnership with Sierra Network Radio and with support from members of the Sierra Leonean diaspora, the organization intervened and successfully facilitated the release of the two women.
CHRDI noted that the intervention not only secured the freedom of the detainees but also reunited two young children-including a three-week-old baby, with their families.
The organization expressed appreciation to the Sierra Leone Correctional Service for its cooperation, emphasizing that collaborative efforts remain key to addressing systemic challenges within the justice system.
“Change is possible when we work together,” CHRDI stated.
