The Sierra Leone Commercial Motor Bike Riders Union has announced that all commercial motorbike riders across the country will be required to wear helmets while riding, starting Monday, 9th March 2026.
The directive follows a constructive meeting between the Union’s National Secretariat and the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), aimed at enhancing road safety and protecting riders during their daily operations. According to the agreement, only riders are required to wear helmets at this stage; passengers are not yet included in the enforcement.
In a statement, the Union urged all regional, district, and park executives, as well as members, to fully cooperate with the new safety measure and ensure strict compliance within their ranks. The initiative forms part of broader efforts to promote safety, discipline, and responsible riding nationwide.
The Union emphasized its commitment to working closely with the SLP and other stakeholders to maintain a safe and orderly transport system for both riders and the general public.

This is ridiculous
Passengers are equally entitled to life saving protection. Why? Is the rider’s life more precious than the passenger’s life or the passenger is just an expendable material that provide the cash for the biker’s and his health/welfare insignificant. Please their welfare should also be considered and I urge the authorities to reconsider their decision.
