The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists has strongly condemned the alleged assault of legal practitioner and media trainer Paul Kamara by officers of the Sierra Leone Police, calling for an immediate and impartial investigation into the incident.

According to SLAJ, the alleged assault occurred on the evening of April 4, 2026, at the Adonkia Police Station, where Kamara had reportedly gone in connection with an ongoing investigation into the death of his colleague, Augustine Sensie Bangura.

In a statement issued on Monday, SLAJ said Kamara claimed he was physically assaulted by police officers, including being forcibly restrained, dragged, and pepper-sprayed following an interaction at the station.

The association described the allegations as ”grave,” noting that if proven, the incident raises serious concerns about the use of force, professionalism, and respect for citizens’ rights.

Although the police have not yet released an official account of the incident, SLAJ said the seriousness of the claims warrants urgent attention. The body called on the leadership of the police to launch a swift, thorough, and impartial investigation, and ensure that any officers found culpable are held accountable.

SLAJ also urged the Independent Police Complaints Board and other oversight institutions to closely monitor the case to ensure transparency and justice.

Additionally, the association called for the safety and protection of Kamara and any potential witnesses.

”SLAJ reiterates that respect for the rule of law, professionalism, and accountability must remain the cornerstone of policing in a democratic society,” the statement read, warning that failure to address such incidents could erode public trust in law enforcement.

The statement was signed by Edward Marah, Secretary General of SLAJ, who said the association will continue to monitor developments and support efforts aimed at ensuring justice.
