A major milestone has been achieved in Sierra Leone’s energy sector as the turbine for the 108-megawatt Nant Energy Power Project has successfully arrived at the Kissy Dockyard in Freetown.
The arrival of the turbine marks a major step forward in efforts to strengthen the country’s electricity generation capacity and address persistent power shortages. Once fully installed and operational, the Nant Energy plant is expected to substantially boost national power supply, providing much-needed relief to households, businesses, and industrial operations.
Energy experts indicate that the 108MW facility could nearly double the current generation capacity supplied by the Karpowership, particularly improving electricity availability during the dry season when hydroelectric output typically declines.
The project is part of broader government initiatives aimed at ensuring a more stable and reliable energy mix for the country. Authorities and stakeholders have expressed optimism that the development will enhance economic productivity and improve living standards nationwide.
Construction and installation activities are expected to continue in the coming months, with power generation projected to commence by early next year.
The Nant Energy project stands as a critical intervention in Sierra Leone’s journey toward energy security and sustainable development.
Sierra Leone suffers from extreme power outages especially in the dry season. Experts believe that the Sierra Leone energy sector is on a high stakes transition period. The country possesses huge potential for renewable energy but investments are limited in that area.
Approximately, less than 36 percent of the country’s population is connected to the national grid. The Nant project is expected to significantly increase this number, especially in the capital Freetown.
