Football governance and administration in West Africa received a boost as the West Africa Football Union Zone A (WAFU-A), in partnership with the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), concluded a three-day competition management workshop in Freetown.
The training, which brought together sixteen participants from nine member countries, focused on enhancing the technical capacity of football administrators responsible for organising and managing competitions across the sub-region.
With sessions centred on match organisation, supervision, and reporting, the workshop underscored a growing regional push to professionalise football management and ensure uniform standards in competition delivery.

WAFU President Lamin Kabba Bajo highlighted the urgency of such initiatives, noting that the rapid evolution of the game demands well-trained administrators capable of keeping pace with global best practices. He described competition management as a cornerstone of any successful football system and reaffirmed WAFU-A’s commitment to sustained capacity building across its member associations.
For the host nation, the workshop also reflected increasing recognition of its role in regional football development. SLFA President Babadi Kamara said the programme signalled growing confidence in Sierra Leone’s football leadership and organisational ability.

He emphasised that beyond technical training, the gathering reinforced regional unity, pointing to the shared cultural and historical ties among WAFU countries. Kamara encouraged participants to replicate similar training initiatives in their home countries to further spread knowledge and improve standards.
He also referenced Senegal as a model for football development in the region, urging stakeholders to adopt strategies that can elevate the game across West
Africa.
The workshop, held in Freetown, concluded with the awarding of certificates to participants, marking another step in ongoing efforts to build a more competitive and professionally managed football ecosystem in the region.
