The Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) and the Sierra Leone Commercial Bike Riders Union (SALCOMBRU) have agreed to strengthen collaboration on electoral education and civic participation ahead of the country’s 2028 General Elections.
The understanding was reached during a courtesy visit by SALCOMBRU officials to the Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of ECSL, Mr Edmond Sylvester Alpha, in Freetown.
Speaking during the engagement, Mr Alpha described commercial bike riders as an important part of Sierra Leone’s electoral landscape, noting that their presence across the country gives them the ability to support public awareness campaigns on elections and civic responsibility.
He said bike riders remain one of the country’s most visible groups, with direct access to communities in both urban and remote areas, adding that their mobility places them in a strong position to help spread messages on voter education, peaceful participation, and democratic engagement.

Mr Alpha further stated that ECSL values partnerships with community-based groups and institutions that can contribute to credible, peaceful, and inclusive elections. He said collaboration with SALCOMBRU could help expand electoral outreach efforts and improve civic awareness ahead of future electoral activities.
The SALCOMBRU delegation was led by the Union’s President, Ishmeal Sandy, who congratulated Mr Alpha on his appointment as Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of ECSL.
Mr Sandy reaffirmed the Union’s willingness to work closely with ECSL in promoting civic education and encouraging responsible citizenship among its members and the wider public.
According to discussions held during the meeting, both institutions explored possible areas of cooperation, including organised electoral education programmes and the development of guiding principles aimed at ensuring constructive engagement between ECSL and the Union.
The meeting ended on a cordial note, with SALCOMBRU presenting a congratulatory plaque to Mr Alpha as a symbol of the Union’s support and commitment to contributing to peaceful and credible elections in Sierra Leone.
