The search for a new head coach of the Leone Stars has reportedly taken another twist, with Belgian tactician Tom Saintfiet said to have declined an opportunity to lead Sierra Leone’s senior national team after being approached by the Sierra Leone Football Association.
Saintfiet had recently emerged as one of the leading names linked with the vacant position following reports that the SLFA was actively seeking an experienced foreign coach ahead of upcoming continental assignments. However, fresh reports now indicate that the former Gambia national football team and Mali national football team manager will not be taking over the role.
The Belgian coach is widely respected for his strong record in African football, having guided Gambia national football team to their first-ever Africa Cup of Nations appearance and later managing Mali national football team. His decision is likely to force Sierra Leone’s football authorities to quickly redirect attention to alternative candidates.
The coaching vacancy became one of the most talked-about issues in Sierra Leonean football after Mohamed Kallon was relieved of his duties earlier this year. In April 2026, the SLFA officially opened applications for the position, outlining requirements including a CAF A License, UEFA Pro License, or equivalent qualification, alongside senior-level coaching experience.
With the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign approaching and expectations high among supporters, the next appointment is considered crucial for the future of the national team. Football stakeholders are hoping for a coach capable of building consistency, improving tactical identity, and maximizing the talent within the current squad.
The SLFA has yet to make an official announcement on who will be appointed, but pressure is mounting for a swift decision as preparations for upcoming international fixtures continue.

That will be good for the country
