The first batch of deportees from the United States arrived at the Freetown International Airport today, according to Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Timothy Musa Kabba.

Minister Kabba disclosed that the number of deportees received was nine, contrary to earlier expectations that 25 individuals were scheduled to arrive in the initial group.

Speaking in an interview with Truth Media, Minister Kabba explained that the arrangement was not a direct quid pro quo, but rather a humanitarian decision by the Government of Sierra Leone in consideration of the constraints faced by the United States and the welfare of ECOWAS citizens being held in detention.

He stated that Sierra Leone’s decision to accept the deportees was intended to play its part in ensuring the safety of ECOWAS nationals detained in the United States.

According to the minister, the move is consistent with international law and reflects what he described as a moral responsibility on the part of the government.
