Global betting company 1xBet Sierra Leone celebrated the nation’s 65th Independence Day by launching a new grassroots sports initiative designed to foster unity and support local communities across the capital.

The inaugural 1xBet Independence Tournament brought together teams from eight Freetown communities, culminating in a festive grand final on the April 27 national holiday. The event blended national pride with corporate social responsibility, providing financial support to local athletes and engaging fans both at the pitch and online.

As part of its commitment to supporting local talent and community development, 1xBet invited eight neighborhoods to compete: Moiba, Brima Lane, Calaba Town, Rokel, Grassfield, Rokupr, Cline Town, and Thunder Hill.

In addition to organizing the logistics for the multi-community event, the company provided substantial cash prizes to empower the participating teams. The tournament champions, Grassfield Community, received a grand prize of 100,000 leones, while runners-up Brima Lane Community received 20,000 leones to support their local sports programs.

The corporate support extended heavily to the spectators who filled the stands. To mark the milestone 65th anniversary, 1xBet distributed free commemorative merchandise, including custom Independence Day branded T-shirts and national flags, transforming the sporting event into a broader community celebration.

“Football, national pride, and local communities came together in one celebration,” a representative from 1xBet Sierra Leone stated, noting that the initiative aimed to give back to the communities that form the backbone of the country.

To ensure the independence celebrations reached fans nationwide, 1xBet also launched a digital engagement campaign. An online giveaway on the company’s Instagram platform allowed football enthusiasts to win practical prizes—including Infinix HOT 60 Pro smartphones, Oraimo power banks, solar lamps, and earphones—simply by tagging friends and showcasing support for their local neighborhood teams.

On the pitch, the tournament concluded in dramatic fashion. Brima Lane Community held a 1-0 lead at halftime, but a second-half equalizer by Grassfield Community captain Sallieu Tarawalie pushed the game to a 1-1 draw at full time. Grassfield ultimately secured the inaugural trophy by winning the subsequent penalty shootout 5-4.
