The Ministry of Health Sierra Leone (MoH) has received a consignment of 18,000 ampoules of donated Lassa fever drugs from the Chinese Embassy in Sierra Leone, in a move expected to strengthen the country’s preparedness against potential outbreaks.
The timely donation is set to boost Sierra Leone’s capacity to respond effectively to Lassa fever while enhancing protection for frontline health workers and vulnerable communities. Health officials say the drugs will help address treatment gaps, particularly in hotspot districts such as Kenema, Bo and Kailahun Districts.

Receiving the items on behalf of the Minister of Health, Dr Austin Demby, the Chief Medical Officer, Dr Sartie Kenneh, expressed appreciation to the Government and people of China for their continued support to Sierra Leone’s health sector.
“Partnerships like these remind us that global health security is a shared responsibility, and China has always stood by Sierra Leone both during health outbreaks as well as during quiet moments. We remain very grateful,” Dr Kenneh stated.

Lassa fever remains a public health concern in Sierra Leone, particularly during the dry season. The highest incidence rates are typically recorded in the Eastern and Southern Provinces, with Kenema and Kailahun districts among the most affected areas.
