U.S. President Donald Trump has formally sent the nomination of career diplomat Daniel Travis to the Senate to serve as the next U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Sierra Leone.
The announcement, released by the White House, marks a key step in filling a vacancy left open after the previous envoy, Ambassador Bryan David Hunt, resigned from his post due to personal family medical reasons.
Since Hunt’s departure, the diplomatic mission in Freetown has been overseen on an interim basis by Chargé d’Affaires Jared Yancey.
A Veteran Diplomat for West AfricaTravis, a California native and a career member of the Senior Foreign Service with the rank of Counselor, brings more than two decades of diplomatic experience to the role.
He currently serves in Washington as the Director for the Office of Economic and Regional Affairs within the State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs. His extensive background in the region includes 17 years of field assignments spanning several sub-Saharan nations, including previous tours in Kenya, Uganda, and Ghana. Notably, Travis has also served as the Deputy Chief of Mission and Chargé d’Affaires in the Republic of the Congo, making him highly familiar with regional security and economic frameworks.
The nomination arrives at a time when the administration is placing a renewed emphasis on economic diplomacy across Africa. Recent policy shifts suggest that U.S. envoys to the continent will be heavily measured by their ability to broker commercial deals, protect American investments, and navigate upcoming trade milestones, such as discussions surrounding the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).
Travis’s background in economic and regional affairs aligns with these strategic priorities as Washington seeks to counter growing investments from competing global powers in the region.
If confirmed by the Senate, Travis will relocate to Freetown to formally pick up where the previous administration’s envoy left off. He will be tasked with managing bilateral relations with the government of Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio, whose administration recently dispatched its own new ambassador, Amara Sheikh Mohammed Sowa, to Washington.
The nomination has been officially referred to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for consideration. A date for Travis’s confirmation hearing has not yet been scheduled
