The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) has announced the introduction of enhanced Ebola preventive and health screening measures at the Freetown International Airport (FIA), following the recent emergence of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) cases within the sub-region.
According to the Director General of the SLCAA, the proactive intervention is aimed at safeguarding public health, ensuring the safety of passengers and aviation personnel, and preventing any possible cross-border transmission of the virus through the aviation system.
The Authority stated that the measures are in line with national public health directives and international aviation health standards, and form part of ongoing efforts to maintain a safe and secure airport environment.
Under the new measures, health personnel at the airport are undergoing continuous sensitization and briefings on Ebola Virus Disease, including its symptoms, transmission patterns, and approved preventive protocols.
In addition, Ebola awareness and preventive signage have been deployed across the terminal building to improve public education and encourage compliance with health guidelines.
The SLCAA further announced that mandatory hand sanitization has been introduced for all passengers, staff, and visitors at designated points within the airport premises.
Routine temperature screening of all passengers and airport users has also been activated as part of strengthened health surveillance procedures.
The Authority disclosed that the airport clinic has been placed on full operational readiness to promptly manage and respond to any suspected health-related incidents.
Where necessary, social distancing measures are being implemented within passenger processing and waiting areas to reduce potential health risks.
Furthermore, an ambulance has been stationed on standby at the airport to ensure rapid medical evacuation and emergency response in the event of any suspected case or health emergency.
The SLCAA assured the travelling public and airport stakeholders that all preventive systems are active and that relevant personnel are fully prepared to respond to any situation in coordination with national health authorities.
The Authority urged the public to remain calm, observe all health and safety instructions at the airport, and cooperate fully with airport and health officials.
It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the integrity of Sierra Leone’s aviation system while prioritizing the health and wellbeing of all airport users.
