President Julius Maada Bio has joined African leaders in Abuja, Nigeria, for a high-level tribute event held in honour of former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar.

The event, taking place at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport and other designated venues in Abuja, celebrates General Abdulsalami Abubakar’s legacy in democratic governance, peacebuilding, and regional stability. He is widely recognised for overseeing Nigeria’s transition to civilian rule in 1999, a milestone in the country’s political history.

President Bio, who also serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, was invited as Guest of Honour at the ceremony. He is expected to deliver remarks highlighting General Abubakar’s contributions to democracy, conflict resolution, and African integration.

The gathering has attracted several prominent African leaders and statesmen, including former Nigerian Head of State General Yakubu Gowon, former South African President Thabo Mbeki, and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Upon arrival in Abuja, President Bio was received by Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr Julius F. Sandy, alongside General Abdulsalami Abubakar and senior officials of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The tribute event underscores ongoing efforts by African leaders to recognise individuals who have played key roles in strengthening democratic governance and promoting peace across the continent.

President Bio’s participation also reflects Sierra Leone’s continued commitment to regional cooperation, democratic consolidation, and support for African-led peacebuilding initiatives.
