The Government of Sierra Leone has established a multi-agency task force to address growing concerns over lawlessness, illegal street trading, traffic indiscipline, and noise pollution in Freetown.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Internal Affairs, AIG (Rtd.) Morie Lengor Esq., during the Government Weekly Press Conference held in Freetown on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.
According to the Minister, the task force comprises the Sierra Leone Police, the Freetown City Council (FCC), and the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA).
He said the initiative forms part of broader government efforts to restore law and order, improve urban management, and enhance the attractiveness of the capital for tourism and investment.
Lengor emphasized that maintaining discipline and ensuring compliance with existing laws are critical to the development of a modern and well-organized city. He noted that the task force has been mandated to enforce regulations relating to unauthorized street trading, the operation of commercial motorcycles and tricycles, and noise pollution.
The Minister disclosed that the Government is working closely with the Freetown City Council to relocate traders operating in unauthorized locations to designated market spaces.
He cited Wilberforce as an example of successful relocation efforts and revealed that similar exercises would be undertaken in Lumley, Jui, and other congested areas once alternative facilities become available.
He stressed that Freetown must be transformed into a clean, orderly, and properly planned city capable of supporting economic growth and attracting investment.
The establishment of the task force reflects the Government’s renewed commitment to enforcing urban regulations and addressing challenges affecting public order and city management.
